Activism Through Fashion

Written by Sublime Team

Dr Laura Santamaria, Editor of Sublime chairs the third 2019 Better Lives symposium, Legacies: Beyond Fashion Activism

This event will inspire a cultural conversation around the activities and impacts generated from the ‘Making for Change: Waltham Forest’ project. Developed in partnership between Centre for Sustainable Fashion and Waltham Forest Council for London Borough of Culture 2019 and the Great Place scheme, the project has used fashion activism and making as catalysts for positive change. However, as the London Borough of Culture year is coming to an end, this raises issues of what legacies have been activated beyond the project’s timeframe and funding?

About Better Lives:

Contributing to Better Lives is one of the core values at London College of Fashion. We believe that fashion can help shape lives for the better and build a sustainable and socially conscious future. As a Higher Education Institution, LCF has a vital role in educating the next generation of fashion designers, communicators and entrepreneurs, as well in enabling them to become conscious citizens of the world.

The planned move of the College to Stratford in 2022 gives us an unprecedented opportunity to interweave the transformative practices of Education for Sustainability through the new site. With this in mind, we have established a strategic partnership with Waltham Forest Council for the ‘Making for Change: Waltham Forest’ project that is a part of the London Borough of Culture 2019 and the Great Place scheme. Hence, this Better Lives symposium will be hosted outside the College, at One Hoe Street, a community space set up as a hub for the London Borough of Culture 2019 in Waltham Forest.
