Tote-ally Plastic Free July

As we enter a new month, we turn our attention to a different cause, Plastic Free July. This month, we are focussing on discouraging using single-use plastics in the hope to make sustainable long-term changes.

Rebecca prince-Ruiz founded Plastic Free July in 2011 with help from a small team in local government in Western Australia. After 6 years, Rebecca went on to establish the Plastic Free Foundation to help support the cause and participants better. The Plastic Free Foundation works all year round to reduce pollution caused by plastic. Last year, approximately 326 million people took part across the world with the hope to combat the climate crisis.

The campaign is a global movement that supports people in their journey to being a part of the solution towards a healthier planet. The idea is to start refusing to use single-use plastics in July to form positive habits which follow throughout the rest of the year.

Throughout the month of July, people using plastic alternatives have contributed to a total saving of 940 million kg of plastic per year. Furthermore, out of everyone who participated, 8.5 out of 10 people created habits that have become a way of life.

The campaign has won awards for its positive environmental change: The 2018 Infinity Award Avoid Recover Protect – Community Waste Award, The 2018 Environmental Action Award, United Nations Association of Australia WA Division, and more.

Plastic Free July focuses on educating people on how they can reduce the amount of plastic waste they produce. By refusing to use single-use plastics, you are forcing yourself to find replacements. The campaign suggests creative plastic-free alternatives for work, school, events and more.
